AJ Bush reduces emissions and saves on electricity and coal using meat processing waste to generate biogas

The rendering plant at Beaudesert, owned by AJ Bush & Sons, processes four million kilograms of animal waste each week.

With the assistance of $6 million of Federal Government funding under the Clean Technology Program, the effluent ponds were covered to ensure that emissions were captured in on-site ponds.

This ‘biogas’ is then used to generate around 25% of the electricity used at the plant.  The plant’s electricity bill is no longer the $130,000 per month it used to be, and the plant uses half of the 24,000 tonnes of coal once needed to run the company’s boilers each year.
